Most of this KuCoin review is arithmetic rather than opinion. On 18 October 2026 we pulled KuCoin's own public market endpoints — the symbol list, the ticker feed, the currency list, the futures contract list — and then walked 82 live order books one by one. Everything below is either a number KuCoin publishes about itself or a number we computed from one.
The headline finding is simple and it is not in any other review: the advertised 0.1% spot fee applies to 487 of KuCoin's 968 live spot pairs. The other 481 are charged 0.2% or 0.3%, the class is published in the API as a field called feeCategory, and the exchange interface never calls it out before you trade. Once you add what the order book actually does to a market order, the median all-in cost of a $1,000 buy across our sample was 0.51% — five times the number on the fee page.
KuCoin review: the short verdict
KuCoin is a large, functioning, broadly honest exchange with a genuinely deep top end and a very long, very thin tail that its marketing does not distinguish from the top end. It is not a scam. It is also not a 0.1% venue for most of what it lists, and the gap between those two statements is where people lose money.
| Factor | What we measured on 18 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Live spot pairs | 968, across 814 tradable base assets |
| Pairs at the advertised 0.1% | 487 of 968 (50.3%). 229 are 0.2%, 252 are 0.3% |
| Median all-in cost, $1,000 market buy | 0.51% across an 82-pair sample |
| Liquidity concentration | BTC-USDT alone is 28.0% of USDT volume; the top 20 pairs are 80.4% |
| Futures | 702 contracts, flat 0.02%/0.06%, 125x on exactly one of them |
| Proof of reserves | Real, but covers 4 assets of 814, snapshot dated 30 September 2026, no audit firm named |
| Governing law | Turks and Caicos Islands; disputes arbitrated in Singapore, which is itself a restricted location |
| Custody | Custodial. KuCoin holds the keys |
If you want the same "follow a better trader" outcome without an exchange balance in the middle of it, our Solana copy trading bot guide covers the non-custodial route, and the platform comparison places KuCoin against its direct rivals.
How many coins does KuCoin actually list?
968 spot pairs across 814 unique base assets. That is what api.kucoin.com/api/v2/symbols returned at 15:05 UTC, counting only entries where enableTrading is true — which was all of them.
Compare that with the published numbers. KuCoin's own fee explainer on its blog says the exchange "offers over 1,500 spot markets, with over 700 cryptocurrencies supported." The first figure is roughly 55% higher than the API says and the second is about 14% lower. Third-party reviews quote everything from 1,100 to 1,200 coins. None of them match the endpoint, and the endpoint is the thing the matching engine actually reads.
Where does the inflated count come from? Probably the currency list. /api/v3/currencies returns 2,264 asset records, of which 1,450 are not tradable on any live pair. That is the archive — delisted tokens, legacy chains, assets that exist only as a balance you can still move out. Counting it as "supported coins" is how a 814-asset exchange becomes a 2,000-asset exchange in a marketing deck.
Quote currencies are heavily concentrated too: 813 of the 968 pairs quote in USDT, 58 in USDC, 55 in BTC, 18 in ETH, and the remaining 24 split across USD1, KCS, EUR, TRX, USDG and DOGE. Margin is enabled on 82 pairs — about 8% of the book.
The fee class nobody quotes
KuCoin sorts every spot asset into Class A, B or C, and the class sets your fee. At VIP 0 the published rates are 0.1%/0.1% for Class A, 0.2%/0.2% for Class B and 0.3%/0.3% for Class C, from the VIP fee structure page last updated 7 May 2026. The class is set by the base currency and the fee is charged in the quote currency, so KCS-BTC and KCS-USDT share a class but bill you in different assets.
Every review quotes the 0.1%. We counted which pairs actually get it:
| Class | VIP 0 fee | Pairs | Base assets | Share of 24h volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 0.1% / 0.1% | 487 (50.3%) | 359 | 89.19% |
| B | 0.2% / 0.2% | 229 (23.7%) | 213 | 4.74% |
| C | 0.3% / 0.3% | 252 (26.0%) | 242 | 6.07% |
Read that table twice. Class A carries 89% of the money but only half the pairs. The unweighted mean taker fee across the 968 live pairs is 0.1757% — 76% above the advertised rate. Volume-weighted it falls to 0.1169%, because the big pairs are cheap. Which number applies to you depends entirely on whether you trade the top of the book or go hunting in the tail, and the tail is the reason most people open a KuCoin account in the first place.
Class B and C are not confined to dust, either. PIEVERSE-USDT turned over $12.69M in 24 hours at Class B. Q-USDT did $12.34M at Class C. AGT-USDT $6.30M, DNA-USDT $4.97M, CENT-USDT $4.64M — all Class C, all charged triple the headline rate.
One more wrinkle worth knowing about: KuCoin's own two published descriptions of these fees disagree. The VIP fee structure page says Class B and C are 0.2% and 0.3%. The KuCoin blog's fee breakdown says "the base KuCoin spot trading fee comes to 0.16% and 0.24%." Both are KuCoin documents, live on the same domain on the same day. We used the higher, more recently dated VIP page throughout, and note the conflict rather than pick a winner.

We priced 82 order books: the spread costs more than the fee
A trading fee you can read in advance is the least interesting cost on an exchange with 968 pairs. The interesting cost is what the book does to your order. So we built a deterministic sample — every tenth pair down the USDT volume ranking, 82 pairs in total, 38 Class A, 22 Class B and 22 Class C — pulled the top 100 ask levels for each from the public endpoint between 15:10 and 15:11 UTC, and simulated a market buy.
| Order size | Median slippage vs mid | Slippage > the pair's fee | Not fillable in 100 levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| $100 | 0.16% | 45 of 82 pairs | 0 |
| $1,000 | 0.35% | 64 of 82 pairs | 0 |
| $10,000 | 11.98% | 59 of the 62 that filled | 20 of 82 |
Three things fall out of that.
- At $1,000, the spread beats the fee on 64 of 82 pairs, and more than doubles it on 45. The median all-in cost — fee plus slippage — was 0.51%.
- At $100 it is already happening on more than half the sample. Small orders do not escape the problem; they just lose less in absolute terms.
- At $10,000, a quarter of the sample could not fill inside the 100 best ask levels the public API publishes. That does not mean the order is impossible — there is book below level 100 — it means the visible depth ran out, which is exactly the regime where a market order becomes an act of faith.
The worst cases are genuinely bad. A $1,000 market buy on ANTFUN-USDT (ranked 481st by volume) cleared 64.52% above mid on a pair charging a 0.3% fee. EAT-USDT cost 56.87%, MEZO-USDT 56.43%, LMTS-USDT 40.40%. These are not delisted ghosts; they are live, tradable, promoted markets.
The top of the book is a completely different exchange. A $10,000 market buy on SOL-USDT cost 1.5 basis points over mid. AVAX-USDT cost 4.9. BTC-USDT was indistinguishable from mid at every size we tested. If you only trade majors, KuCoin's advertised fee is roughly the fee you pay, and our guide to slippage in crypto trading explains why that stops being true the moment you leave them.
Where the liquidity actually is
KuCoin's 813 USDT pairs turned over $1.04 billion in 24 hours, and one pair was 28% of it.
- BTC-USDT: $291.0M — 28.0% of all USDT volume on its own.
- Top 5 pairs: 53.5%. Top 10: 67.5%. Top 20: 80.4%. Top 50: 90.9%. Top 100: 95.4%.
- Median USDT pair: $33,512 in 24 hours. 560 of 813 pairs (68.9%) did under $100,000; 214 (26.3%) did under $10,000.
- Quoted spreads: median 21.9 bps. 631 pairs (77.6%) quote a spread wider than the 10 bps Class A fee; 78 pairs (9.6%) quote wider than 1%.
The oddest single data point concerns KuCoin's own token. KCS-USDT was the fourth-busiest pair on the exchange at $55.6M of 24-hour volume, yet its entire visible 100-level ask side held roughly $35,000. We re-pulled it to be sure and got $34,776 on the asks against $26,121 on the bids. A pair can do enormous turnover through fast-cycling small orders while holding almost no resting depth, and that is a distinction worth understanding before you size a position in it.
There is also a quiet circuit breaker most users never notice. KuCoin publishes a priceLimitRate per pair, and 632 of 968 pairs cap an order at ±5% from the reference price, with another 279 at ±8%. On a thin pair in a fast move, your order is not slow — it is rejected.
Withdrawal fees: the same dollar costs $0.40 or $5.50
KuCoin prices withdrawals per chain in the native asset, and nobody rebases those numbers as prices move. The result is that identical actions cost wildly different amounts depending on a dropdown you probably ignore.
| Asset | Withdrawable chains | Cheapest | Dearest | Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USDT | 18 of 19 | 0.40 (Plasma) | 5.50 (ERC20) | 13.8x |
| USDC | 15 of 18 | 0.21 (Sonic, Polygon) | 5.50 (ERC20) | 26.2x |
| BTC | 3 of 6 | $0.32 (BEP20) | $7.31 (native BTC) | 22.5x |
| ETH | 7 of 7 | $0.24 (Base) | $3.57 (ERC20) | 15.0x |
| KCS | 2 of 2 | $0.45 (KCC) | $3.71 (ERC20) | 8.3x |
USD conversions use the KuCoin mid at the same timestamp: BTC $81,201.40, ETH $2,381.37, KCS $7.42. Across all 923 priced, withdrawable currency-chain routes, the median fee was $0.66 and the 90th percentile $1.94 — so the typical withdrawal is cheap, and the expensive ones are concentrated almost entirely on Ethereum mainnet. Moving USDT off the exchange over ERC20 rather than Plasma costs 13.8 times as much for the identical outcome. By comparison, a Solana transaction costs a fraction of a cent, which is part of why on-chain execution keeps eating this market.
Two smaller traps are visible in the same data. 26 tradable assets have deposits disabled on every chain they list — WAN, XDB, PYR, EGLD, ISLAND, ANTFUN and 20 others, spread across 28 live pairs that did $2.64M in 24 hours. You can sell what you already hold; you cannot bring more in. And four tradable assets — EGLD, ZPAY, MAPO and ILY — currently have withdrawals disabled on every chain, so the only exit is selling into KuCoin's own book. Separately, 26 pairs carry the st flag for Special Treatment, KuCoin's pre-delisting warning label.
Is KuCoin safe? What proof of reserves actually covers
KuCoin publishes a real Merkle-tree proof of reserves, and it covers four assets. That is the honest answer, and it is more nuanced than either "KuCoin is 1:1 backed" or "KuCoin is unsafe."
The reserve page, read on 18 October 2026, shows a snapshot dated 30 September 2026 23:59:59 UTC+8 with these ratios:
- BTC 109% — user assets 7,358.67, wallet assets 7,994.37
- ETH 117% — user assets 99,131.54, wallet assets 115,905.46
- USDT 110% — user assets 965,449,021.59, wallet assets 1,057,452,810.48
- USDC 127% — user assets 79,789,664.75, wallet assets 101,094,761.90
Those are good ratios, and the self-verification tool lets any user check their own balance against the tree. Three caveats belong next to them. The snapshot was 18 days old when we read it. The page says holdings are "verified by an independent third party" and names no firm. And the coverage is four assets out of 814 tradable ones — nothing on the page speaks to the reserves behind the long tail where Class B and C live. Proof of reserves tells you about BTC, ETH, USDT and USDC. It tells you nothing about the token you actually bought.
The structural point is the one that applies to every custodial venue: KuCoin holds the keys. A proof of reserves is a statement about a moment in the past, not a property of your position. If that bothers you, the alternatives are self-custody for anything you are not actively trading or non-custodial execution where the assets never leave your wallet in the first place.

Futures: 702 contracts, 125x on exactly one
KuCoin Futures runs 702 active contracts, 701 of them USDT-margined perpetuals, at a flat 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker on every single one at the base tier. We checked all 702 for fee variation and found none — unlike spot, futures really is one price.
The leverage marketing deserves a second look. "Up to 125x" is true of exactly one contract, XBTUSDTM, and 100x of exactly one more, ETHUSDTM. The actual distribution across 702 contracts: 273 cap at 20x, 130 at 30x, 101 at 50x, 82 at 10x, 53 at 25x, 43 at 75x, and the remainder lower. The median contract caps at 20x. On XBTUSDTM the initial margin is 0.8% and maintenance margin 0.4%, meaning a 0.4% adverse move against a maximum-leverage position is a liquidation.
Futures turnover was $1.69 billion over 24 hours — more than the entire USDT spot book — and it is concentrated like everything else here: the top 5 contracts are 28.7%, the top 50 are 77.1%, and 25 contracts did under $10,000 each. The taker fee is charged on notional, so at 20x a 0.06% taker fee is 1.2% of your margin per side, a point we work through in detail in our crypto leverage trading guide.
Who cannot use KuCoin, and under whose law
KuCoin's Terms of Use, last updated 29 September 2026, name the restricted locations explicitly: the United States and its territories including Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa; Singapore; mainland China and Hong Kong; Malaysia; Kazakhstan; Uzbekistan; Ontario and British Columbia; France; the Netherlands; and the Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions of Ukraine. The agreement adds that the list "may be updated from time to time at the Platform's sole and absolute discretion."
Two clauses are worth reading slowly. Article 103 states the agreement is governed by the laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Article 104 sends every dispute to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre — in a jurisdiction the same document bars you from living in. The sanctions baseline is also Turks and Caicos lists rather than OFAC or EU lists. Whether that matters to you depends on how likely you think you are to need recourse.
The 2025–2026 enforcement record is public and specific:
- 27 January 2025: Peken Global Limited, which operates KuCoin, pleaded guilty in the Southern District of New York to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. Penalties totalled more than $297 million — a $112.9 million criminal fine and $184.5 million forfeiture — plus a US market exit of at least two years and the removal of founders Chun Gan and Ke Tang from management.
- 30 March 2026: a CFTC consent order permanently enjoined Peken Global from giving US participants direct access without registering as a foreign board of trade, with a $500,000 civil penalty. The order records approximately 1.54 million US participants between July 2019 and June 2023, generating roughly $110 million in derivatives trading fees.
- 2026: Dubai's VARA issued a notice of fines against Peken Global for providing broker-dealer and exchange services without a licence, following a March 2026 investor alert; KuCoin cooperated and said it intends to enter VARA's licensing process.
- October 2026: South Korea's Financial Intelligence Unit moved to block the websites of 27 unregistered exchanges including KuCoin, extending a mobile-app restriction imposed the previous year.
- 2026: Austria's FMA barred KuCoin EU Exchange GmbH from onboarding new customers after finding the money-laundering and sanctions officer roles unfilled. The order was not yet legally binding when reported.
Note the entity confusion, which is not nitpicking: the DOJ describes Peken Global as Seychelles-based, the CFTC consent order describes it as incorporated under the laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the Terms of Use pick Turks and Caicos law. Your counterparty depends on which KuCoin entity your jurisdiction routes you to.
On KYC: since 31 August 2023 new users must complete identity verification before using KuCoin's products. Unverified accounts cannot deposit crypto, cannot create API keys, cannot trade from sub-accounts, and can only place sell orders on spot. Verification gates both the entrance and the 24-hour withdrawal limit, which starts at 1,000,000 USDT at VIP 0 and rises to 60,000,000 USDT at VIP 12.
KuCoin copy trading, in one paragraph
KuCoin runs a lead-trader copy product with a profit share, and we published a separate investigation of it after pulling its leaderboard endpoint: 138 lead traders, every one of them showing a positive 30-day return, while their copiers' aggregate PnL was negative. Rather than repeat the tables here, read our KuCoin copy trading analysis for the leaderboard data, the profit-share rates and the contract clauses. The fee layer stacks on top of everything in this review: you pay the spot or futures fee, you pay the spread, and then you pay a share of any profit.
KuCoin against the alternatives
Most exchanges in this bracket have the same shape — deep majors, thin tail, custodial, profit-share copy trading bolted on. The differences are in degree.
| Venue | Base futures fee | Custody | Where we cover it |
|---|---|---|---|
| KuCoin | 0.02% / 0.06% | Custodial | This review |
| BingX | 0.02% / 0.05% | Custodial | BingX review |
| BloFin | 0.02% / 0.06% | Custodial | BloFin review |
| Hyperliquid | On-chain order book | Self-custody | Hyperliquid review |
| On-chain Solana | Network fee plus route | Self-custody | Solana copy trading |
The real comparison is not KuCoin against another exchange, it is custodial against non-custodial. On KuCoin, the assets sit in KuCoin's wallets, the leaderboard is KuCoin's to compute, and your exit depends on a withdrawal queue. uwuu takes the opposite approach: a verified on-chain leaderboard anyone can audit, non-custodial execution where funds never leave your wallet, sub-400ms copy execution, and a performance-based fee you only pay when a copied trade is profitable. Different trade-offs, and the risks are different too — worth understanding both before committing capital. Binance and Bybit sit in the same custodial camp as KuCoin if you want more points of comparison.
How to use KuCoin without paying the hidden half
If you do use KuCoin, five habits remove most of the cost we measured.
- Check the fee class before you trade, not after. Pull
api.kucoin.com/api/v2/symbolsand readfeeCategory: 1 is 0.1%, 2 is 0.2%, 3 is 0.3%. One request answers it for all 968 pairs. - Use limit orders outside the top 20 pairs. Our sample says the spread beats the fee on 64 of 82 pairs at $1,000. A maker order avoids the spread entirely and, at VIP 5 and above, the maker fee goes to zero.
- Size against visible depth, not 24-hour volume. KCS-USDT did $55.6M in a day on about $35,000 of resting asks. Volume measures churn; depth measures what your order will hit.
- Never withdraw over ERC20 by reflex. USDT costs 0.40 on Plasma and 5.50 on Ethereum. BTC costs $0.32 over BEP20 and $7.31 native. The dropdown is worth 10 seconds.
- Pay fees in KCS if you trade often. The 20% discount applies at every VIP level, though from VIP 8 up it becomes taker-only because the maker fee is already zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is KuCoin safe to use in 2026?
KuCoin is a functioning exchange with a real Merkle-tree proof of reserves showing 109–127% coverage on BTC, ETH, USDT and USDC as of the 30 September 2026 snapshot. The caveats are that the proof covers 4 of 814 tradable assets, names no audit firm, and that KuCoin is custodial — it holds the keys. Treat it as a trading venue, not a vault.
What are KuCoin fees really?
The advertised 0.1% spot fee applies to 487 of 968 live pairs. 229 pairs are charged 0.2% and 252 are charged 0.3%, giving an unweighted mean of 0.1757% across the book. Futures are a flat 0.02% maker and 0.06% taker on all 702 contracts. Paying in KCS takes 20% off the spot fee.
Is KuCoin available in the US?
No. The United States and its territories are named restricted locations in KuCoin's Terms of Use. Peken Global pleaded guilty in January 2025 to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and agreed to exit the US market, and a March 2026 CFTC consent order permanently bars direct US access without foreign board of trade registration.
How many coins does KuCoin support?
814 tradable base assets across 968 live spot pairs, measured from the public symbols endpoint on 18 October 2026. The larger figures you see quoted come from the currency list, which holds 2,264 records — 1,450 of them not tradable on any live pair.
Why did my KuCoin order fill at a worse price than expected?
Almost certainly the spread. Across our 82-pair sample a $1,000 market buy slipped a median 0.35% against mid, which is more than the trading fee on 64 of the 82 pairs. On pairs outside the top 100 by volume, slippage routinely runs into double-digit percentages. Use limit orders there.
Is KuCoin better than on-chain copy trading?
They solve different problems. KuCoin gives you one account, fiat rails and 702 perpetual contracts, in exchange for custody and a leaderboard only KuCoin can audit. On-chain copy trading on Solana keeps the assets in your own wallet and the trader's record publicly verifiable, at the cost of managing a wallet yourself. If custody is your main concern, the on-chain route is the honest answer.
Does KuCoin have hidden fees?
Not hidden in the sense of undisclosed — the fee classes, withdrawal fees and VIP grid are all published. They are hidden in the sense of unsurfaced: nothing in the trading interface tells you that the pair you are about to buy is Class C at 0.3%, and nothing warns you that the withdrawal chain you picked costs 13.8 times the cheapest one.
Every number in this review came from KuCoin's own public endpoints and documents on 18 October 2026. Market data moves; re-run the checks before you rely on them, and if you would rather follow a trader whose record you can verify on-chain yourself, start here.
